How can foreign citizens live legally in Romania?
Foreign citizens who want to live legally in Romania for a longer period must obtain a residence permit issued by the General Inspectorate for Immigration. Below is a brief overview depending on the type and purpose of the stay.
Types of residence permits
There are two main types:
Temporary Residence Permit
- Commercial, economic or professional activities;
- Work (individual employment contract registered in Romania);
- Studies (enrolment at an accredited educational institution);
- Family reunification;
- Scientific research activities;
- Religious activities;
- Other justified purposes.
Long-Term Residence Permit
Can be applied for after a legal and continuous stay for the past 5 years. Validity: 10 years for family members of Romanian citizens, 5 years for others.
Procedure
- Temporary permit β approx. 30 days (+15 days extension possible), to which it is added the time required to obtain the work permit and visa in advance, in the case of obtaining a residence permit for work purposes;
- Permanent permit β up to 6 months (+3 months extension possible).
